Wired Off-Chip Communications

Wired Off chip communications allow communication between the SoC and outside peripherals that are physically connected. This can include: memory, peripherals, sensors, and other SoCs or systems. The main differences between on-chip and off-chip interfaces is that there are more limitations on the number of wires used for off-chip interfaces, as well as the increased resistance and capacitance due to the extended length of the physical connections.

Wired off-chip communications are therefore usually lower bandwidth than on-chip communications and can lead to a significant bottlenecks in data flow for a system unless system operations are well designed.
