I would also encourage exploring the Ethernet-based off-chip communications subsystem in nanoSoC V3, as John suggested. Comparing its energy use against your compression accelerator should give a good system-level view of your work's impact.

Welcome to SoC Labs, and good to connect again, this time on the platform! Great to hear you'll be joining the MSc in Microelectronics Systems Design at Southampton soon.

It's great that you're keen on hardware accelerators, and your three years of experience as a digital design engineer are a strong base to build on. Once you're settled in, I would suggest starting small to get a feel for the full flow before going deeper into any one area.
